Various types of ropes
Nylon rope offers great elasticity and shock absorption for mooring and towing but loses strength when wet and is damaged by UV rays. Polyester rope has low stretch, stable wet strength and good UV resistance, suitable for marine rigging and anchoring. Polypropylene rope is lightweight, floats on water and resists chemicals at low cost, yet has poor UV and heat performance for temporary binding and water rescue. UHMWPE (Dyneema) rope delivers ultra-high strength with light weight, low stretch and chemical resistance, though sensitive to heat and UV, widely used in offshore towing and heavy lifting. Kevlar (Aramid) rope is high-strength, flame-resistant and non-melting with minimal elongation, used in high-temperature industrial and rescue scenarios but degrades under prolonged UV and repeated bending. Natural manila hemp and cotton ropes are soft and easy to knot with low tensile strength, prone to rot when wet, mainly for decoration and light bundling. Static rope features low elongation for abseiling and height work, while dynamic climbing rope has controlled elasticity to absorb fall impacts for mountaineering.
